Ready for backfill

Image
We are ready for backfill...which should only take an hour or so.  Then hopefully I can coax Miguel to come by and start framing :-)

Walls complete

Image
The block wall is done and Thom has started his waterproofing process... weeping tile around the footing, covered by a healthy 12" of gravel (after the inspector was by to check); parged block wall, rounded at the bottom to encourage water away from the footings; bitumen painted and then a locking membrane pressed in and another layer of bitumen painted over; blue skin on the corners where new joins to old, and finally, a layer of plastic dimpled membrane to provide an air and drainage layer for water that makes it inside to the wall.

Block progress

Image
Tom is making good progress with the block work on the addition, despite the on again, off again Spring weather we're having.

Foundation starts

Image
I'm glad we tarped the edges of the excavation - it's been very wet recently!  However, with a nice sandy bottom, we're in good shape and have started the block wall.

Bonus foundation

Image
With a nice easing into Spring, we were able to get an early jump on the prep and excavation.  Today, we formed the footings and the inspector came by and gave us the go ahead to pour.

Excavation

Image
Thom was humming away today as we excavated four 15-yard bins of earth for the addition foundation.

Demo continues

Image
Of course, the hard part of the demo is always what's hidden.  In this case a thick concrete slab under 4 inches of flagstone...

Demo starts

We started demolition today - the small attached porch area was gone pretty quickly.
